Mike Heiligenstein: Making Cities Smarter

Cities exist, among other reasons, because they reduce the costs of trade and production for economic agents. Many predicted the advance of communication and virtual commerce would attenuate the growing role of cities. However, the great cities of the world continue to grow, and central districts enjoy a shine that was lost in front of the suburbs. It seems that the main reasons are the new economies of scale that come from. In any case, people still prefer to live in cities, and there is no indication that urban density will cease to increase shortly. The challenge for governments is to maintain the quality of life of citizens with a special focus on urban mobility. But, what is the role of technology in these new models?

Fortunately, technology advances and offers opportunities for cities to be “smarter” and therefore more efficient in tackling mobility problems. The concept of the smart city is a little diffuse and general, where the government has the task of mediating information flows and coordinating activities with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life of citizens in a broad sense. Many cities are implementing reforms that will gradually lead to more “smart” reforms. But the real change will be seen in the near future with the convergence of two processes that exploit the technological advance and which, until now, have developed in parallel.

About Mike Heiligenstein, the man behind the curtain

Mike Heiligenstein is the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority that aims to stay a leader in mobility and transportation industry, not just in Texas where it is based, but all over the United States. Thanks to him, many infrastructure projects have seen the light and are now on the way of becoming extended programs for major park development and trails. Mike worked for over 23 years as a Central Texas public official in the communities of Round Rock and Williamson County. He is currently part of the board of the Texas Transportation Institute and the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Government, and then went on to pursue a Masters of Government and a Masters of Business Administration in the same institution. With a lot of work left, he will continue his commitment to smart cities and a brighter future in the suburbs.

Securus Continues To Innovate For Law Enforcement With The WCS

Prison is supposed to be uncomfortable. Convicts have committed a crime, gotten caught for that crime, sat in a courtroom to be convicted by a jury of the convict’s peers, and have been sentenced to jail. It is a lengthy process that all but ensures the guilt of the accused. Essentially, the people in prison deserve to be in prison.

In order to serve as a deterrent, prisons should feel uncomfortable. Statistics show that prisoners who decent treatment in the prison system are much less likely to commit crimes when released. When a prisoner receives an education inside the prison, they are also much less likely to commit more crimes. This reduction in crime rate also extends to prisoners who were allowed to talk to their friends and family on the outside of the prison. I believe in the humane treatment of prisoners and we should take all steps necessary to reduce recidivism, but that doesn’t mean prison should be a cakewalk.

Prisoners should be allowed to talk to their friends and family on the outside of the prison, but they must do so under strict supervision. That is where a company like Securus comes in. Securus is a telecommunications giant. They provide telecommunications services, including telephone and Internet services, to prison and jail facilities.

When a prisoner tries to make a telephone call to the outside of the prison, Securus is there to provide that phone call. The prisoner pays for that phone call and the call is recorded. Securus provides law enforcement with software technology that allows investigators to comb through a massive amount of digital data using a vocal signature. The software can identify one particular voice within its database and pull-up all recorded phone calls involving that voice.

This system is circumvented when a prisoner gets a contraband cell phone within the prison. Calls made on a contraband cell phone cannot be recorded. These phones are often used to plan crimes inside and outside of the prison. Recently, Securus innovated a way to stop contraband cell phone activity.

The company unveiled the Wireless Containment System (WCS). The system prevents any contraband cell phone within a prison from connecting to a mobile network in order to make a call or a text. The system also identifies the signal in order to get more information for law enforcement about who may on the phone. It is a giant step forward in stopping illegal activity within a prison.

Public Relations Entrepreneur Helps Us Find Peace and Gratitude

Darius Fisher wears many hats as the founder of Status Labs. Indeed, he has to, because his online reputation firm literally has a multitude of millionaire clients that want to make sure their reputation in cyberspace remains solid. Fisher truly goes the extra mile for his clients and he has been profiled in the New York Times, Forbes.com, and many others. He details his early life, the formation of his company, and the keys to his success in a recent interview with Daniel Budzinski.

Darius Fisher is a native New Yorker, and grew up in a family that valued education. Because of that, he graduated with the typical Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree, and he took a public service job in the political realm. It didn’t take him long to realize that there was a huge demand for digital reputation management simply because he was continually getting requests from people to help them with their online reviews. For Fisher, the internet is “reality, even with it’s not,” and that is why he decided to take the huge step of quitting his job and starting Status Labs about four years ago.

The company has experienced tremendous growth since then, but it hasn’t been without any challenges. Fisher said that in the beginning the logistics were a huge hurdle to clear. Another challenge for Fisher would be the fact that he has mostly younger individuals working for him simply because they are more aware of the digital world.

Even though his business is referral-based, he has been successful simply because he has been able to carve a niche for himself. For Fisher, mindfulness is the key. When he sleeps, he puts his phone in airplane mode. Even though he is a workaholic, he is always trying to find the right balance.

For the young entrepreneur, Fisher’s advice is simple: “Think less, and do more.” Fisher believes that people stagnate when they simply talk about ideas but never get anywhere with them. That is why he is a man of action and not just words.
